Tessellation 04 - MARTIN BOYLE

£200.00

TITLE
Tessellation 04

ARTIST
Martin Boyle

ABOUT THE WORK

This artwork, Tessellation 04, is the fourth pattern in the fifteen different types of convex pentagon tiles known to tile a plane ‘monohedrally’ (monohedral tessellation is a special type of tiling in which all tiles are the same shape and size. The tiles can produce complex repeating patterns using a single base unit).

Tessellation 04, is part of LAZY-EIGHT, a new design project by artist Martin Boyle incorporating his interest in art, design, geometry and astronomy. Influenced by ideas from euphoric and dark romanticism, recent work has probed the gap between what science tells us and what we tell ourselves. He creates conceptual artworks across diverse mediums, including installation, sculpture, photography, video, and site-specific pieces.

LAZY-EIGHT specialises in producing vibrant tiled artworks of geometric forms and tessellated patterns that are digitally designed and cut, then painted and assembled by hand. The title of the project refers to the infinity symbol often described as a horizontal figure of eight, which in livestock branding terminology is called a lazy eight.

These pieces are part of a collection called Image in false colour, which takes inspiration from composite imaging and visual representations of data collected from space exploration.

Some of the works are available in a limited series while others are available as a piece from a much larger work, which may never be seen together, or in its entirety.
