ARTIST
Phillip McCrilly

ABOUT THE WORK
This work is a recreation of a wall painting of the signature of Saint Eligius that was originally exhibited within the exhibition Irish Modernisms: legacies of modernism in the North,’ at CCA Derry~Londonderry. Alluding to the importance of the parish priest within the ESB’s Rural Electrification Scheme, and the blessing ceremonies that would have accompanied the switching on of electricity within rural Ireland, the signature references Saint Eligius’s patronage as the patron saint of electrical engineers. The work takes its name from a section from Paul Muldoon’s poem ‘The Loaf’ from ‘Moy Sand and Gravel (2002), and the original painting has been fractured and reproduced as four separate screenprints, hinting at the tradition and custom of religious relics.
